For many women, the goal of breast augmentation has changed over the last several decades. In the past, women wanted significantly fuller breasts with a more rounded shape. These days however, more and more women are seeking natural contours that are more proportionate to their frame. The great thing about breast implants is the ability to achieve results that are in line with your preferred aesthetic goals, whether it be subtle or dramatic changes.
Studies have shown, based on self-reported quality of life metrics, that a well planned and executed breast augmentation can give a woman a newfound sense of self-confidence and improve her overall quality of life. Thanks to the latest surgical advancements and implant types, it is easier for the well trained and experienced breast augmentation expert to obtain natural-looking results. Today, we’ll take a closer look at a few things to consider in the planning stages of your augmentation to ensure you get the results you want.
#1: Choose A Skilled Surgeon
As a board-certified surgeon myself, I understand the level of skill, expertise, and artistry it takes to accomplish natural-looking augmentations. I cannot recommend enough that you choose a surgeon that routinely performs your specific procedure and one who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. This certification will help ensure your surgeon is committed to continuing education and follows a strict code of both ethics and safety standards. There are many other certifying boards, so “Board Certified” alone is not enough – make sure it is the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Board-certification is just the beginning. Experience and an artistic eye are equally important. Years of experience, having performed many thousands of breast augmentations, provides one with the expertise to handle all situations and breast types to assure the best possible outcome. The goal is not to simply perform the operation, the goal is to safely create beautiful breasts.
#2: Size Matters
The first instinct many women have is to increase their breast size by several cups. However, you may not realize just how dramatic your results can be without going too large. I typically encourage women to opt for a breast implant that is proportionate to her individual frame. Proportion still means that there is a range of size – and the best method I’ve found for determining the correct size for you is to bring a number of different tops to your sizing visit – a tank top, tighter fitting T-shirt, a loose blouse, and if you wear a specific uniform for work, bring that as well. You will try on multiple bras with different implant sizes. This will allow you to have an excellent idea of what your final result will be based on this sizing method. I have tried and eventually abandoned computer imaging for breast size selection – the implant sizing method is more accurate and results in greater satisfaction. Size matters!
#3: Explore Your Implant Options
Over the past 10 years, a large number of new implants have been brought to market. There are different shapes and different fill characteristics. While the majority of women choose cohesive silicone gel filled implants, saline filled are still popular as well. I generally recommend a submuscular placement to give you the most natural contours and prevent future rippling down the line.

#4: Consider A Breast Lift
Although breast augmentation can produce game-changing results on its own, many women can benefit from the addition of a breast lift. Implants increase the size and enhance the shape of your breasts but if your breasts droop, a lift might be worth considering to reduce excess skin, enhance breast shape, and reposition the nipples for a perkier appearance. If I feel that a lift would be beneficial to you, at your initial visit I will show you what a lift can accomplish with a temporary taping of your breasts to create the lift.
As previously mentioned, the best first step to achieve a natural breast augmentation is through an in-person consultation with a board-certified surgeon such as myself. I’’ll speak with you about your ultimate goals and discuss all of your options in-depth. Together, we’ll be able to craft a custom procedure that’ll have you looking and feeling your best.
I was a 32B prior to my procedure. I was tired of feeling self-conscious about my non-existent boobs and knew I wanted the transaxillary method for breast augmentation. I went to 3 different plastic surgeons. Dr. Barnett was recommended by one of the 3 plastic surgeons because of his expertise in the transaxillary method. I can attest that Dr. Barnett definitely knows his stuff– he has been doing this for several years, has published an article on transaxillary breast augmentation in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, and have been in panels weighing in on various clinical trials on breast surgery. In addition, he is an artist who paints and sculpts on the side. So you have the best of artistry and technical skill in one person, which is important because breast augmentation is affected by your plastic surgeon’s sense of aesthetics.
