What’s the Recovery Time for a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the world’s most commonly performed cosmetic surgery, and with careful planning, recovery is typically quick and easy. Thousands of women have the procedure each year to increase the size and enhance the shape of their breasts. Whether you’re bothered by underdeveloped breasts or would like to boost breast size after pregnancy, an augmentation can help.
Recovery times can vary based on a large number of factors. Your overall health, incision type, placement, and even size, of your implant can all play a role in how much time you’ll need to heal. For example, larger breast implants may stretch overlying skin making recovery slightly longer. However, there is a general rule of thumb I give patients when planning their augmentation.

Recovery: Week One
Breast augmentation is done as an outpatient procedure meaning you can go home the same day. However, you’ll need to have a friend or family member drive you home. It’s a good idea to have someone stay with you for 24 hours as you “come down” from the effects of general anesthesia. Remember, even small tasks may seem difficult immediately following surgery.
Pain and swelling will be at their worst several days post-op. Typically, swelling peaks on the 4th day following surgery. Prescription medication will be given during this time to minimize any discomfort. You’ll need to take several days to rest up after your breast augmentation. After 24-hours, you should and can move around the house every several hours to promote blood circulation. It’s ok to take a walk outside, but don’t push it!
The majority of women start to incorporate normal activities into their routine in about 3-7 days. Depending on your day job, most patients return to school or work on the 4th postoperative day. Women with more physically strenuous jobs should consult with their surgeon before getting back into the swing of things. You will continue to wear post-surgical garments throughout the first week or two after surgery.

Recovery: Week Two
You should feel more comfortable during week two of recovery. You may continue to tire easily, however, most activities can be resumed without difficulty. Post-surgical garments should be worn day and night as recommended. Many women are anxious to get back into their normal routine as quickly as possible after surgery. But be aware, pushing yourself too hard can prolong the healing process and increase the risk for potential scars.
Lifting after a breast augmentation is a no-no. You’ll be advised to refrain from lifting anything over 10-pounds for about 2- 3 weeks. You can return to the gym after a week, but initially go slow. Gradual weight limits will increase over time. By three weeks you can return to full activity without limitations assuming you’ve just had a breast augmentation. If you’ve had an augmentation and a lift, the time to full activity is six weeks. Closely following your personalized recovery plan during this time is essential for a speedy healing process.

Most women feel more like themselves about 4-6 weeks following their breast augmentation. The majority of post-surgical swelling will have subsided, and the results of your procedure will become evident. Final results from augmentation surgery can take 6-12 months as your breasts “settle” into their new position.
Dr. Barnett provides customized written instructions both before surgery and at your first post-operative visit. The instructions at the first post-operative visit include information not only on routine physical activity, but detailed information on breast exercises to assure the best possible result, information on medications, and on follow on breast examinations and care.
